Production Proposal for Ruth Anderson

You’ve written songs you believe in and you have a dream for your release. Now it’s time to collaborate with someone to bring your music to its fullest potential.

As your producer, I bring all my resources and experience as an award winning record producer, collaborator, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist, composer, and audio engineer to help you turn your vision into an amazing sounding recording that you and your fans can enjoy for the rest of your lives.

What You Get



Whether we’re doing an album, EP, or single, job 1 is to crystallize a vision for the music. Through pre-production conversations, listening to other artists that inspire your work, and exploring a variety of instrumentation/sounds, we will clarify the aesthetic vision and project goals. The focus is on music, but thinking of the narrative and story behind the music is really important here too.

Song Development

In folk, roots, Americana, rock, and blues the song is the most important part of the production. We work together to pick the best songs to record based on your goals. For a 10 song album, it’s not uncommon to work from a pool of 20 (or more) rough demos and pick the best 10 to produce. Side note: recording quality of your demos does not matter. We’re going for emotion over fidelity.

In this process we will refine the arrangement, lyrics, chord progression, and melody. Artists often work in isolation, so having some outside feedback and fresh ears on a project can offer a helpful perspective. This collaboration offers some artists the opportunity to refine their songwriting and to grow as an artist.

Guitars and more

My usual process is to take your scratch track and orchestrate layers over top. I play electric guitars, acoustic guitars, resonators, mandolin and banjo professionally and the studio is home to a huge selection of great instruments all available for your production. I love using creative processing on these instruments and am always on the search for interesting sounds. I’m work with you to find the right approach.

The song might also need other instruments such as bass, drums, or keyboards. If so, I will find you the best players for the job and guide the recording process.


In order to be considered for radio, streaming playlists, and film/TV placements songs are expected to have a high production value. I record in a professional studio with a world class analog recording chain. The room is tuned for studio recordings. The gear list includes beautiful mics, preamps, instruments, and guitar amps. If you’re recording remotely, I help advise on the audio gear, engineering, and any needed give technical assistance.

My role as producer includes helping you choose your best vocal takes and experiment with singing approaches.

Editing, adding ambient textures, and any sound design/processing is all part of production as well.


My mixing is included. If on your recording we decide to get an external mixing engineer, which is sometimes the right decision, I will find a great person for your music and budget, and be there to guide the process.


Project management and accountability

There are a lot of steps in producing a professional release. I help artists incrementally break down high level goals into bite sized tasks so they can accomplish their dream sound.

Without structure creativity can evaporate and fizzle away. I have found that setting deadlines is vital to keep a creative project fresh and moving forward.

Once a project is booked, we will set dates and tasks so you are always clear about the project.


One of the most common pieces of feedback I get from artists is that they feel safe creating with me. Making art can feel vulnerable and I strive for the process to be meaningful, creative, and super fun.

Here's what is NOT included

These are the things that are not included in the price. While not part of my fee, I will help find the right people, be there to guide the process, and administer the payment. 

Session Musicians

I play electric guitars, acoustic guitars, resonators, mandolins, and banjo. Often I play bass on recordings and sometimes I program drums and keys. If your songs needs other session players (most do), I will connect you will my network of amazing, world-class players, who also happen to be awesome people.


Mastering is the final step to make a song or album release-ready. Mastering engineers provide the final set of ears on the song to ensure the mix sounds amazing on all devices and platforms. I will find the right person for your music and budget and help you gather the information you will need to ensure you receive all royalties for your music.

The Process and Timeline


This proposal gives you an overview of what is included, what is not included, what to expect, the timeline, the investment, the next steps, and the terms and conditions.

Once you’ve had a chance to look everything over, you can pay the balance below.


Discussion about project goals, visions, influences, and what you hope the project will achieve for your music and career.


Upload demo tracks of all the songs you are considering recording. We will use these recordings to work on arrangements, songwriting, and ultimately select which songs to record.


Create “scratch tracks” or “guide tracks” (typically recorded to a click track) of the selected songs


Using the scratch tracks, we will layer the instruments I play, include any session players, and add great sounds and textures. We will work closely together, communicating every step of the way.


Once the elements are in the production, we will shift our focus to the lead and background vocals.


If everything sounds good, we find the right mixing and mastering engineers to put the elements together and follow the vision for the project.

Joel is a guitarist/producer and composer based in Toronto, and a unique voice in the Canadian and American music scenes. He specializes in electric guitar.

As an in-demand freelance musician, Joel has collaborated with a diverse range of artists. Recent credits include Birds of Chicago, Amelia Curran, Matthew and Jill Barber, Great Lake Swimmers, Royal Wood, Jessica Mitchell, Aviva Chernick, Andrea Koziol, Dione Taylor, Lydia Persaud, Jadea Kelly, and many others. He is thrilled to sometimes play mandolins and guitars in the original hit musical, Come From Away.

Joel has produced records for Dione Taylor, Lindsay Foote, Aviva Chernick, Gathering Sparks, and Jadea Kelly and many others.

Joel’s contributions on guitars, mandolins, slide, and banjo can be heard on several film and television scores by Ari Posner, Amin Bhatia, Stacey Hersh, Rob Carli, and Jim McGrath.

Joel studied jazz performance at Humber College and has trained with some of Canada’s most celebrated jazz players including Don Thompson, Ted Quinlan, David Occhipinti, Jerry Granelli, and Don Palmer.
